Carl Wilhelm Hahn and Carl Ludwig Koch, Nuremberg, 1831 to 1847
Die Arachniden is a 16 volume work on spiders, scorpions, harvestmen, mites and their relatives, with 563 engraved and hand-colored plates. Hahn wrote the first two volumes (1831 to 1835); Koch wrote the other fourteen. The plates carry 1,554 numbered figures, and many species are still described from them.
Every figure is on it once, in the order of the animals: spiders first, then whip spiders, scorpions, pseudoscorpions, sun spiders, harvestmen, and mites and ticks. Within each group the families follow a rough evolutionary sequence and the species run alphabetically. Rows and columns are numbered along the edges, and a position is written row/column.
Koch's own names are given as printed. Current names and families come from the World Spider Catalog, GBIF, the Catalogue of Life and the Scorpion Files; about 70 names could not be placed and sit in the family of their genus. The figures are cropped from the Biodiversity Heritage Library scans of the book (public domain).
The poster as an A3 PDF (print ready) and the key as a PDF (all figures by position, with the locality Koch gave).
